Sonic Joma

Sonic “Sony” Joma was born on June 29, 1946. He was born to his parents, Fatal Joma and Estilia Fortin. Sony came to Florida in December of 1979, where he met and married his wife, Willie Mae Simmons Joma. Sony’s close friend, Jean Roseme introduced them and thought they would be a good couple. Sony has been married to his bride for 40 years. Sony was overjoyed to be a father to James, Sr., Kymani, London, and Landen, and a wonderful husband to his wife, Willie. As we reflect on Sony’s legacy, he overcame language and citizenship. We celebrate a life filled with love. Sony’s life has an impact on many people, and he made many friends who have become family far beyond Haiti. In his pastime, Sony enjoyed watching the old school TV show, “Sanford and Son” (all the reruns). Over the years, he was employed as a laborer working in harsh conditions moving on to hotel/hospitality, and later to employment at the Orlando Naval Training Center. He retired as a landscaper at Walt Disney World and was proud of his union membership 517. Sony joined St. Paul AME Church in Apopka, Florida, under the leadership of Reverend Gerard A. Moss, Sr. He attended church with his family regularly until he was no longer able. On Friday, December 19, 2025, at 9:00p.m., Sony exchanged his earthly life for eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his father, Fatal Joma; mother, Estilia Fortin; and siblings: Senaide Joma, Saint- Anne Joma, Saint-Hilaire Joma, and Michel Auchelle; and grandson, Justin L. Porter. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Willie Mae Simmons Joma of Apopka, FL; children: James Cameron Washington, Sr., London Marie Sonie Simmons Joma, and Landen Alexander Simmons Joma, all of Apopka, FL; Siblings: Olanne Desmoulin of Apopka, FL, and Litanette Aucbelle of Haiti; mother-in-law, Jennell Simmons; 1 brother-in-law, Willie Simmons (Kate) of Apopka, FL; 3 sisters-in law: Mary Bennett, Sue Rozier, and Priscilla McKinney; all of Apopka; 1 grandson, James C.
