Phyllis A. King Hendricks

Phyllis Alison King Hendricks was born in Trinidad & Tobago on November 29, 1951 to Albert and Elmada King. She was the youngest of six children at the time. Her brother, Clinton, would arrive eight years later. She was elated to have a brother since they were a family of all girls. Phyllis has an eventful and active childhood. She would tell stories of having to walk long distances to get water so that the daily household chores could get done. She would remember having to take turns with her sisters to prepare meals for the family. Some would think Phyllis was of the the boys because anytime you would be looking for her, all you had to do was look up because odds are she's outside climbing trees to get some of the sweet nectar from one of her favorite treats, mangoes. She loved music and would often groove to the tunes of Lord Kitchener, Sparrow, and Baron. She migrated to St. Croix as a young adult where she spent her formidable years. She met her husband, Mitchell and started their family. Phyllis has a gift of bringing people together. She organized block parties and numerous family gatherings. These gatherings were filled with an abundance of food, music, people she loved. Phyllis enjoyed playing mas each year with the J & J Fun Troupe. She would often travel to Miami , Trinidad, and New York for their Carnivals. Her love of playing mas was passed down to her children and grandchildren. Phyllis's value of education propelled her to go back to school in the 1990s to attain several certifications in adult and child care from the University of the Virgin Islands. She knew that education would open more doors for her, so she took the GED tests and passed down with high marks. This enabled her to make the necessary next steps in life. By the end of the 90s, Phyllis decided to move to Florida with her family to seek better opportunities. She knew it was not going to be easy, but she was determined to make a better life for her family. She was so excited when she got the Administrative Secretary position at the Florida State Attorney's Office. She spent 15 years there before retiring early due to significant health ailments. Although this new challenge presented itself, Phyllis did not let that stop her from being the best wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She continued to pour love into her husband, children, and grandchildren. She continued teaching and nurturing them so that they could continue the traditions that she held near and dear to her heart. Phyllis will always be remembered as a loving, caring, and giving person. Phyllis Alison King Hendricks leaves her beloved: Husband: Mitchell Hendricks. Children: Natasha Oliver, Jenell Hendricks, Michael Hendricks, Dawn Hendricks, Mitchell Hendricks, Jr., Randy Hendricks (deceased), and Michelle Hendricks (deceased). Grandchildren: Makeda Hendricks, Makayla Peterson, Malachi Peterson, Maisha Peterson, Malaika Peterson, Xavier Stevenson, Masai Peterson, Elijah Durant, and Alessia Coia. Great-Grandchildren: Keziah Peterson, Zoya Peterson, and Zayn Peterson. Sisters: Elvira Powell, Stella James-Gray, Joan Bryan, Jeanette Christian, and Valeria Joachim. Brother: Clinton Lawrence King (deceased) Brother-In-Law: Kenrick Powell, John Gray, and Carl Bryan. Sister-In-Law: Rochelle Hodge, Claire Robinson, and Ingeborg Levy Nieces: Michelle Medford, Cassiann Stewart, Carlene Bryan, Joanne Estwick, Laurel Williams, Dana Richardson, and Derise Hodge. Nephews: Sherwyn James, Colin Powell, Hassan Abdul Malin, Chris Powell, Keith Johnson, Roy Simeon, Terrance Williams, Peter Sill, Dion Soto, and Daniel Hodges.
