    Maxine E. Higgins

    January 7, 1940 - September 15, 2021

    Maxine Eleanor (White) Higgins was born January 7, 1940 to Grover Cleveland White, Sr. and Beatrice White. Maxine graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1958. She was a dedicated member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church since childhood. Maxine loved to wear her Sunday hats. You would never see her at church without a hat. Maxine was a quiet and easy going person. She was widely known for her big vibrant smile and laugh. Maxine was a wizard around the oven. Her cakes and pies are legendary among her family. Pecan pies and carrot cakes were her favorite to make. During her working years, Maxine was active with the Farm Workers Association. She was an activist for Farm Worker rights. She marched at the capital building in Tallahassee, Florida in the 1980’s to seek aide from the Governor for families due to a hard freeze and no income. She also participated in community meetings and marches to keep Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School open. Maxine is preceded in death by her parents: Grover Cleveland White, Sr. and Beatrice White; and Siblings: Grover C. White, Jr. Dorie White, Calvin White, Sallie White and Ula Mae White. Left to cherish her memories, a loving family… Daughters: Angela Williams (late Charles Williams) of Apopka, Florida, and Jacqueline Bridges (Lorenzo) of Apopka, Florida; Sons: Christopher Ogletree (Marie) of San Diego, California and Dennis Higgins (Janette) of Leesburg, Florida; Grandchildren: Derek Williams, Shavonda Kimmons, Duaron Williams, Brittani Delaine and Sean Jenkins; Great Grandchildren: Deshaun Williams, Khamil Williams , DeSean Jenkins, Tyrie Jenkins, Imani Jenkins, Navarro Jenkins and Zaedyn Jenkins; Siblings: Addie Swain, Mary Bridges, and Marion White, all of Apopka, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
