Mrs. Willie Mae Wyche

Willie Mae Wyche was born 98 years ago in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Queen City, to Shad and Nancy Sanders. It was befitting she was born in Charlotte because Ms. Willie Mae was truly a Queen to her family. Willie Mae graduated from 2nd Ward High School in 1935. Several years later, Ms. Willie Mae left her beloved Charlotte headed for the “Big Apple.” Upon her arrival to New York City, Ms. Willie Mae had already secured a live-in job as a Domestic Engineer for a nice family. Shortly after moving to New York City, she met a young man, fell in love, and got married, and they had four children. Once Ms. Willie Mae’s children were of age, she went right back to work. This time she went to work for the New York City Parks Department. Always wanting to improve her circumstances, Ms. Willie Mae, at the age of 53, went to work for the New York City Transit Authority. She worked as a Token Booth Clerk for 19 years and loved her job. At the ripe young age of 72, Ms. Willie Mae retired from the New York City Transit Authority. After retirement, she moved to the Sunshine State of Florida where she joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Johnny McKinnie where she was affectionately called Mother Willie by some and just Mother by others. Mother Willie belonged to the St. Luke Seniors Outreach Ministry, Council on Aging, and was a lifetime member of the NAACP. She was a faithful member of the New York City Transit Retirees of Florida, Chapter 15, her second family. She loved all of you! I will always be with you: four children, Walter J. Wyche, III, Nancy Wyche Carruthers, Denicee P. Scott, Willie James Wyche; two sister, Mae Brown and Girlie Mae Brown; eighteen grandchildren, Alexandra, Mukoie, Sabrina, Andre, Vas-Shawn, Hyunjoo, Jimeka, Salena, Mary Susan, Vanessa, Chris, Ebonie, Courtney, Waler J., IV, Roy, Brian, Orlando; nine great grandchildren, Jazmine, Maya Alexandra, Kiana, Carlisse, Tyler, Alyssa, Elizah, Sydney and EM Jae; special love to Bev and Rick; honorary children: Grace, Tee, Artrice, Danielle, Nathan; a host of cousins, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
