Velma J. Davis

Velma J. Davis was born July 9, 1942, in Arlington, Georgia to parents Eloise Wimes and James Williams. She was the second of six children. At a young age, her family relocated to Mount Dora, Florida. It was there, she decided to reside as an adult and build a family with her husband, Albert Davis, Sr. After high school, Velma attended college at Bethune Cookman University (formerly known as Bethune Cookman College). After attending college for two years, she left to become a Kindergarten teacher as she enjoyed working with children. She left the workforce for several years to be the caregiver her family needed when her husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness and her daughter, Carmen, needed special medical care. Later in life, she rejoined the workforce as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Lakeview Terrace in Altoona, Florida. Velma retired as a CNA in 2015. As anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her could attest, she was an exceptionally kind and giving person. To her, it did not matter who you were or what your circumstances were, she treated everyone with compassion and dignity. She would literally help anyone in need. She had a great sense of humor and a way about her that would put you at ease and make you comfortable while in her presence. Her favorite pastime included spending time with her family and friends and trying new restaurants. She was also a member of the METS Social Club and enjoyed cooking and watching cooking shows. As a member of Bethel, Velma served faithfully on Usher Board #2 for many years. Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Davis, Sr.; Daughter, Carmen Davis; Mother, Eloise Wimes; Father, James P. Williams; Sister, Bonnie Washington; and Brothers: Robert Wimes and Charlie Wimes. She leaves to cherish her memory a Son, Albert Davis, Jr. (Tomika) of Ocala, Florida; Daughter, Turi Perry (Derrick) of Altamonte Springs, Florida; Sisters: Airredeania Williams (George) of Mt. Dora, Florida, and Mary Hickson of Mt. Dora, Florida; Sisters-in-law: Evelyn Andrews of Mt. Dora, Florida, Kizzie Barksdale of Palm Coast, Florida; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and loving relatives and friends.
