Veleta Rose Shorter

A Time to be Born and a Time to Die Veleta Rose Shorter was born on March 16, 1948 to parents Harvey “Rip” Shorter and Rosa Brown Shorter in Orlando, FL. She was the seventh of twelve children (nine girls and three boys). She was called to her heavenly rest on October 8, 2019 at Orlando Regional Medical Center. A Time to Live In 1967, Veleta graduated from Jones High School where she sang in the Chorus. She was a Home Health Aid in the Medical Community and a dedicated Cafeteria Attendant in various establishments. Veleta was vivacious and rambunctious with a clear meaning of life. Her voice, whether loud or soft, affected change. She was glad to be a part of a large family. Sharing with others about her family fun times and gatherings was very important. She was always clear about who she was; a child of God going to heaven by choice. She loved to sing all day long. If there was a microphone, she was always the leader. Her favorite dance was the “Electric Slide.” Veleta loved to dress in her best with matching accessories and lots of jewelry, especially silver rings. She was known to many as “Lady V”. Veleta loved making people laugh. She did not mind entertaining you with her jokes and sound effects. Some of her favorite sayings were: “Do you know what I am saying? Do you feel me? Do you get me? Say What? See you later alligator and After while crocodile!” Her long laughs activated your heart with joy and laughter. Watching Bruce Lee movies over and over made her smile. Mr. Joe Louis and Mr. Joe Frazier where her two favorite boxers. When it comes to wrestling, you could hear her from afar shouting and screaming, “Get „em! Get „em! Do it again Dusty Rhodes! Yea!” Her excitement brought lots of joy in the home. Veleta was known to tell you everything about her favorite soap opera “All My Children”. This was a family tradition started by her father Harvey (Rip) Shorter who made sure that everyone interested at home was updated. Her favorite local gospel group was the one that her siblings participated in named the Violettes. She loved hearing, “There is a Bright Side”, and “God is Making a Record.” She would tell you very quickly that, “chicken wings, mashed potatoes, and strawberry ice cream with coconut cake are my preferences, PLEASE!” A Time to Serve She was a member of the Church of God since birth and served in the choir, usher board, women‟s ministry and praise team. Veleta enjoyed dressing up and going to church. She never wavered in her decision to serve God. She was blessed to have one daughter, Shelly, in which she was so proud to trust wholeheartedly and call her own. Her fondest memory in life is when she went out of state. She travelled for the first time, with no fear by plane to Chicago to visit her daughter. This was something that changed her life. She told everybody about her experience and what she saw (snow and lots of it). She often spoke about where they went. It was the beginning of more out-of-state travels for Veleta to experience. She later travelled to Atlanta, Georgia and Dyersburg, Tennessee. Veleta‟s life was covered with empowerment from God to teach everyone who listened to what she learned in her life‟s journey. Talking about God was her God-given talent. She will be missed greatly for her life teachings. She Leaves to Cherish Her Memories Veleta was preceded in death by her Father and Mother (Harvey (Rip) and Rose B. Shorter), her favorite sister Mary (Cookie) F. Harris, brothers-in-law: Willie Johnson, Willie Mack Stewart, and John Carr; nephews: Michael Shorter and Elliot Stewart; and one niece Yadira R. Shorter. She is survived by one daughter Shelly Fischer, Chicago, IL; three brothers: Neville Shorter, Jacksonville, FL, Nathan Shorter, and Gregory R. Shorter, Orlando, FL; seven sisters Hydrenia Hart, Ocoee, FL; Mavis Carr, Rev. Sylvia Stewart, Maude Coar, Orlando, FL; Angela (Calvin) Story, Orange City, FL; Sarah Shorter, Ft. Worth, Texas; and Brenda (Morey) Ganaway, Powder Springs, Georgia. Her memories will also be cherished by many (22) nieces and nephews, (62) great nieces and nephews, greatgreat nieces and nephews, great great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of Joe and Addie Brown‟s generations, now cousins.
