He was the 14th of 18 children in a large and loving family. Melvin began his education at Edward Bell Elementary School in Alabama. The family later relocated to Apopka, Florida, where he continued his education at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, Apopka Junior High, and Apopka High School. After High School, Melvin joined Job Corps, where he continued to develop his skills and broaden his horizons. In 1982, Melvin married Pearlie McCalip, and together they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Marquita Hicks and Michella Hicks. Melvin spent some time living in Clearwater, Florida, before returning to his hometown of Apopka. Melvin was a man who embraced life with an adventurous spirit. He wasn’t afraid to try new things and explore different paths. His journey took him to various states and cities, where he lived life on his own terms, as a true wanderer at heart. Melvin departed this life on Sunday, August 11, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, William Bruce Hicks, and seven of his siblings: Dera Jones, Morris Hicks, TJ Hicks, Myrtis McGowan, Margaret Robinson, Irene Brown, and Peggy Ann Brinson. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved Mother, Dennie Hicks of Apopka, Florida; his two Daughters, Marquita Hicks of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Michella Hicks of Holiday, Florida; his six Grandchildren: Leon Williams, Ariana Butler, Cole Mitchell, Cameron Dennis, Cai Dennis, and Jaylen Nieves. He is also survived by his eight Sisters: Annie Newsome, Brucie Hicks, Bernice Lewis, Elizabeth Hicks, Betty Gordon (Maurice), Edith Hicks, Elaine Hicks, and Mildred Hicks; his two Brothers, Elder Tommie Lee Hicks (Rose) and Lyndon Hicks. Additionally, Melvin leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends. Melvin's life was a testament to living fully and embracing every moment. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
