Hylton Edgerton Clarke

Hylton Edgerton Clarke was born on Monday, September 22, 1941, in Welcome, Hanover, Jamaica, to Henry Clarke and Agatha Palmer Clarke. He was the sixth of seven children. His siblings were Enid Clarke, Simion Clarke, Berzel Clarke, Clarista White, Winnifred Whittingham, and Avis Brown. Raised in a close-knit family, Hylton developed the values of hard work, resilience, respect, and perseverance that remained the hallmark of his life. He received his early education at Cacoon Castle Elementary School in Hanover, Jamaica. As a young man, he relocated to Kingston, where he later served as a dedicated Security Officer. In 1986, Hylton migrated to the United States, where he established a life marked by diligence, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family. Professionally, Hylton was a skilled painter who took immense pride in his craft. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence, he believed every job should be completed to the highest standard. His willingness to lend a helping hand made him a blessing to family and friends, and his craftsmanship left a lasting impression on many homes and lives. Hylton was a man of intelligence, conviction, and confidence. He enjoyed engaging conversations about current events, world affairs, and especially American politics. He never hesitated to share his perspective and often amused those around him with his familiar expression, “I’m about to tell you what you don’t know.” A devoted sports enthusiast, Hylton loved discussing games, players, and teams with remarkable passion and enthusiasm. Whether watching a game or debating statistics, he brought energy and humor to every conversation. Those who knew Hylton will also remember his calm outlook on life. He believed that worrying accomplished very little and often encouraged others with his simple but memorable saying: “Dat’s jus’ life. Tek it or leave it.” These words reflected the quiet strength and resilience with which he approached life’s joys and challenges. Above all, Hylton treasured his family. He delighted in spending holidays with his beloved son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. From New Year’s Day through Christmas, family gatherings were among his greatest joys. He loved playing dominoes, sharing stories, and enjoying the delicious meals lovingly prepared by his son and daughter-in-law. He also cherished traveling to Canada to spend time with his beloved sister, Enid Clarke; his nephew, Junior; his niece-in-law, Millicent; and his grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Those visits created treasured memories filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and the warmth of family. On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Hylton Edgerton Clarke peacefully departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, resilience, and unconditional love for his family. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Henry Clarke and Agatha Palmer Clarke, and by his siblings Simion Clarke, Clarista White, Winnifred Whittingham, and Avis Brown. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his devoted son, Delroy Clarke; his beloved daughter-in-law, Alicia “Lisa” Clarke; his cherished grandchildren, Kaelyn and Kylan Clarke; his loving sisters, Enid Clarke and Berzel Clarke; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his love, wisdom, generosity, and friendship.
