Hortense Emma (Washington) Wooten, was born on July 11, 1919 in Bouie, Maryland. The daughter of William P. Washington and Carrie (Mackal) Washington-Burke, Hortense lived in Maryland for much of her youth along with her siblings, George Sollers, Helen Hawkins, Dorothy Russell, William Washington Jr, and Mazie Bivens. In her twenties, Hortense lived with her mother in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During this period, she met a charming and handsome man by the name of Adam Wooten. The two fell in love and eventually married. Deciding to settle down, they moved to Chester, Pennsylvania to start a family. The result: three beautiful and wonderful children in Carl Wooten, Bonita Wooten-Butler and Ernestine Phipps. HER CHILDREN ARISE UP AND CALL HER BLESSED While living in Chester, Hortense entered the medical field at Embreeville State Hospital. She worked in this field for over 27 years, eventually becoming a certified CNA training instructor, offering her vast knowledge and expertise to all new hires and recruits. Beyond her professional achievements, Hortense was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, whose warmth and generosity touched the lives of all whom she met. Through her children, Hortense was blessed with five grandsons: Michael Wooten, Tracey Martin, Paul Phipps Jr, Darryl Wooten and Christopher Butler. In 1987, Hortense moved to Florida to live with her devoted and caring daughter, Bonita. Adjusting to her new life in the Sunshine State, she found a new spiritual home in Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. She remained a faithful member until her passing. Hortense adored life and lived it with true style and grace. Her legacy of love and compassion will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Let us celebrate the profound impact that Hortense has made in all our lives and reminisce about the countless memories that will forever be etched in our hearts. Left to cherish fond memories: a devoted DAUGHTER, Bonita Butler; SON, Carl Wooten (Barbara); GRANDSONS, Michael Wooten (Margo), Tracy Martin (Buffy), Paul B.
