Frederick J. Hunter

Frederick J. Hunter was born February 3, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of ten children born to John and Maude Hunter. He was raised in a loving Christian home. At a tender young age, he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Fred’s family were active members of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania under the leadership of Bishop Ozro T. Jones, Jr. and Reverend Robert Hargrove. Frederick was educated in the Philadelphia School System and graduated from Overbrook High School. God gave Fred a special gift for playing sports, he was such an exceptional player for the Overbrook High school that he led the team to many victories. He would proudly say, I only played varsity and received a total of five letters in football, basketball and baseball. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for Fred to hit the ball out of the park and make home runs for his team. His God given talent opened up doors of opportunities for him to play for the Professional Negro League. As he recalls and tells the story with enthusiasm, “I slid into second base and Willie Mays (Hall of Fame) spiked my right knee.” Yes, Fred was our hero! Frederick married Bonnie D. Shaw-Hunter and to that union, sons, Gregory Hunter, Jeffrey A. Hunter and daughter Nancy Freeda” Hunter were born. There were various employers throughout his life; however, he mostly cherished memories of being an entrepreneur for his women’s lingerie and apparel business in Pompano Beach, Florida. In 1989, Fred relocated to South Florida to enjoy the warm weather, beautiful scenery of palm trees, walk Rueben and Ocean View. Later his daughter Freeda relocated to Florida in 2003. God gave them a second chance to reunite. Fred developed and cherished new friendships while residing in Florida. In his spare time, he volunteered at the Good Neighbor Place Thrift Store in Apopka, Florida. He often was a comedian as he told a joke or two. Prior to Fred’s passing, he became a member of the Seventh-Day-Adventist Church which was located in his community, that’s when he found out that he had a twin name Fredrick Hunter. He was a bold believer in Jesus and often shared his faith with others. He was a valued partner and monthly financial supporter for International fellowship of Christians and Jews. His loving and caring spirit and heart for people will be missed but not forgotten. Frederick was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maude Hunter, siblings, William Hunter, Marlene Hunter, George A. Hunter, Vera Caliman, John G. Hunter, Jeanette J. Burguess, Roger L. Hunter. Frederick leaves to cherish precious memories to: two sons: Gregory Hunter; Jeffery A. Hunter; one daughter: Nancy “Freeda” Hunter; daughter-in-law, Linda Hunter; granddaughter, Imani Hunter; great grandson, Ezra Hunter; step grandson, Lindsy Hunter; two sisters: Mamie DeJear; Catherine Melton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and a household of faith.
