Betty Hicks Gordon

Bett's Story Betty was born in Camp Hill, Alabama to Dennie M. Hicks and William B. Hicks (deceased). She attended Edward Bell High School before relocating to Apopka, Florida in 1970. Once in Apopka, Betty attended Apopka Memorial High School, now known as Apopka High School. She graduated in 1975. At Apopka, Betty was a cheerleader and ran track. In 1975, Betty welcomed her beautiful daughter, La Toya. The following year, she proudly enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. Betty was one of 18 children. Eight preceded her in death: T] Hicks, Irene Hicks Brown, Morris Hicks, Myrtis Hicks McGowan, Dera Golette, Peggy Cartwright, Margaret Robinson, and Melvin Hicks. In 1980, Betty moved to Rochester, New York to follow three of her older sisters who had migrated there. While there, she attended Bryant & Stratton College. Betty could not take the brutal winters and, after two years, returned to the sunshine state in 1982. In 1983, Betty was blessed with a handsome son, Maurice. Betty grew up in the Baptist church before joining Macedonia Free Methodist Church as a young adult. In 1987, Betty was invited to a tent revival by her brother Melvin. That revival would change her life. She joined Mt. Olive Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she became a faithful member and served as Pathfinder Leader and Treasurer at the time the Lord called her home. Betty loved her church and the people in it. She was instrumental in helping to build the new church and worked tirelessly in that effort. Betty went to cosmetology school and was a licensed hairdresser for many years. She began working for Tropical Nut & Fruit (now Truly Foods) in Orlando in 1987. She started in customer service and worked her way up to Sales Manager before retiring in 2021. After retiring, Betty returned to Tropical Nut & Fruit part-time. She also earned her real estate license and pursued real estate part-time. Later in life, she returned to college and completed an MBA and a Master's in Finance. Betty was multifaceted and believed in the power of hard work. She Leaves to Mourn Betty leaves behind a legacy of love that will never be forgotten. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. Her loving mother Dennie M. Betty lived a life of faith, service, determination, and love. Her legacy will continue in the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
